Veridican Gospel of Jesus Christ

Chapter 39

1. Now there was a man named Lazarus from the village where Mary, and her sister lived. And Lazarus was Mary's brother.

2. And Lazarus became very sick, so the sisters sent word to Jesus to come saying, "Lord, behold, the one whom You love is sick."

3. But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness will not end in death, but it will end in the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."

4. Jesus loved Mary, and Martha (her sister), and Lazarus also; so, when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.

5. Then after that time, He said to the disciples who were with Him, "Come, and let us go to Mary's house."

6. But John said to Him, "Teacher, it is in that same village that the religious leaders sought to kill You, and now You want to go back there?"

7. Jesus said to John, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If anyone walks by day, they do not trip up, because they can see the light of this world.

8. "But if anyone walks by night, they stumble, because the light is not in them.

9. "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I will go, so that I may awaken him out of his sleep."

10. And Thaddeus said, "Lord, if he is asleep then he will surely recover--we need not go there."

11. So Jesus said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sake that I was not there so that you may believe, but let us go to him now."

12. Then Thomas said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go with Him also that we may die with Him!"

13. When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been entombed for four days.

14. Many of the people from Jerusalem had come to Martha and Mary to console them. And when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at their house.

15. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give it to You."

16. Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

17. Martha said, "I know that he will rise again on the last day at the resurrection of the dead."

18. Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; anyone who believes in me, though they were dead, yet shall they live. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this, Martha?"

19. She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that You are the Christ, the begotten One of God who has come into the world."

20. When Martha had said this, she went and called Mary, saying secretly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."

21. And when Mary heard this, she got up straightaway and went to Him.

22. Then the people from the Holy City who were with her and consoling her, when they saw that Mary left out quickly, they followed her, believing that she was going to Lazarus' tomb to weep.

23. But Mary came to Jesus and when she saw Him, she fell to His feet and wept, saying, "Lord, if only You had been here, my brother would not have died."

24. And when Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who came with her were also weeping, He was deeply moved in His spirit and was troubled, and He said to them, "Where have you laid him?"

25. So, the people said to Him, "Come, we will show you," and He went with them to the tomb entrance, and there He wept. And the Jews said of Him, "See how He loved him!"

26. Yet some of them doubted and said among themselves, "Could not this man who could restore sight to the blind even keep His dear friend from dying?"

27. So Jesus came to the tomb, which was a cave with a large stone rolled in front of it, and He said, "Remove the stone."

28. But Martha said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a terrible odor, for he has been dead for four days."

29. Jesus replied to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?"

30. Immediately, she ordered the stone be removed. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, "Father I thank You that You have heard Me. I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people standing here I have thanked You aloud, so that they may believe that You have sent Me."

31. And when He had said these things, He shouted into the tomb, "Lazarus, come forth!"

32. Then the man who had died came out of his tomb still bound hand and foot with wrappings and his face was bound with wrappings, and Jesus ordered, "Unbind him, and let him go."

33. A few days later, at Mary and Martha's house, Jesus was having supper with His disciples and Lazarus.

34. Mary then took a pound of costly perfume and oil and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

35. But Judas, one of His disciples who was intending to betray Him, said, "Why was this perfume not sold and the money given to the poor?"

36. Jesus answered him saying, "Leave her alone, for she has saved this for My burial. The poor you will have with you always, but you will not always have Me.

37. "Truly I tell you, wherever the Gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."

38. Therefore, many of the people who came to Mary and saw what Jesus had done believed in Him.

39. But some went to the chief priests and Pharisees and told them the things that Jesus did, and they began to plot how they would kill Jesus and Lazarus on account that many of the people were flocking to Him.
