Veridican Gospel of Jesus Christ

Chapter 48

1. Then Jesus came with them to a place in the garden where they could rest, and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there to pray."

2. He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and He became grieved and distressed, and said to them, "My soul is grieved to the point of death; remain with Me and keep watch."

3. And He went a little ahead of them and fell on His face and prayed saying, "Father, all things are possible for You, so if it is possible, let the hour of this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."

4. Then He came back to His disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Could you not keep watch with Me for one hour? You must keep watch and pray that you will not enter into temptation, for the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."

5. He went away a second time and prayed saying, "Father, if this cup cannot pass from Me unless I drink it, then let Your will be done."

6. Again, He came back to His disciples and found them all asleep, for they had grown tired and their eyes heavy. So, He left them again, and went away a third time and prayed in like manner.

7. When He returned to His disciples, He roused them and said, "Are you still asleep? Behold, the time has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

8. "Arise, and let us go, for My betrayer is here."

9. While He was still speaking, Judas arrived, accompanied by a crowd and several temple guards sent with him by the Chief Priest and the elders of the temple.

10. And Judas had prearranged with them that his sign to them would be whomever he kissed on the cheek. That would be the one, and they should seize Him.

11. At once, Judas went to Jesus and said, "Teacher," and kissed Him on the cheek.

12. And Jesus said to Judas, "You betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" Then they laid hands on Jesus and took Him by force.

13. And Peter reached and drew out His sword and struck a servant of the Chief Priest, cutting off his ear.

14. But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its place; All those who live by the sword will die by the sword; or do you not think I can ask My Father, and He would at once put twelve legions of angels at My command?

15. "The cup the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"

16. Then Jesus said to the crowd, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would arrest a thief? Every day I sat in the temple teaching, and no one seized Me. I spoke nothing in secret, but spoke openly to the world. Yet, behold, this hour and the power of darkness are yours."

17. Then they took Jesus, and all the disciples fled out of fear and left Him, even Thomas.

18. Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, where all the Pharisees were gathered together.

19. Peter followed Him from a distance and went into the courtyard of the temple, and entered in and sat with the other people to see the outcome, and he was warming himself by their fire.

20. Now the Pharisees and Caiaphas were trying to find someone who would give false testimony about Jesus so they might have grounds to put Him to death. And while many gave testimony, it was not consistent nor was it convincing.

21. Finally, they found some people who testified that Jesus said, "I am able to destroy the temple of God that was made by hands and rebuild another in three days made without hands."

22. At this Caiaphas stood and said to Him, "Will You not answer these charges? How do You explain what these men are testifying against You?"

23. But Jesus kept His silence.

24. Then Caiaphas said to Him, "I implore You by the living God, Himself, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the very Son of God!"

25. Jesus said to Him, "I am; and from now on, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven."

26. At that, the Chief Priest tore open his robe and shouted, "He has blasphemed! What further testimony do we need? You all have now heard the blasphemy for yourselves. Now what do you think?"

27. The scribes and the Pharisees answered in unison, "He deserves death!"

28. Then they blindfolded Him, beat Him, slapped Him, and spit on His face from all directions and shouted at Him, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is it that hit You?"
