Veridican Gospel of Jesus Christ

Chapter 9

1. Now, there was a religious leader named Nicodemus who came to Jesus in the night and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are sent from God to instruct us, for no one can give the signs that you give unless God is with Him. But You say You have a kingdom; where is that kingdom?"

2. Jesus answered him saying, "Truly I tell you, unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God."

3. Nicodemus asked, "How can I be born again when I am old? I cannot re-enter my mother's womb and be born a second time."

4. But Jesus said, "Unless you are born of water and of the spirit, you cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh; that which is born of spirit is spirit.

5. "If flesh came into being because of spirit, that is a marvel, but if spirit came into being because of the body--that is a marvel of marvels. And yet you marvel not at how such great wealth has come to dwell in this poverty.

6. "Do not be amazed that I said, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows where it will and you hear the sound of it, but you cannot tell where it came from or where it is going; so it is with everyone born of the spirit."

7. Nicodemus said to Him, "But how is that possible?"

8. And Jesus said to him, "You are a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not know these things?

9. "Truly, we speak of what we know and testify to that which we have seen, but you do not accept our testimony. If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

10. "No one has ever ascended into heaven that did not come from heaven.

11. "But the Son of Man must be lifted up, and all those who look upon Him and believe in Him will have eternal life.

12. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

13. "For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but rather to save the world through Him.

14. "The person who believes in the Son is not judged, but the one who does not believe stands judged already by the very fact that they do not believe.

15. "And this then is the judgment: The Light has come into the world, but the world loves darkness because the deeds of people are evil.

16. "And so I tell you, whoever has come to know the world has discovered a carcass, and whosoever discovers that carcass, of that person the world is not worthy.

17. "For everyone who does evil hates the Light and will not come into it for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

18. "But those who practice truth come into the Light so that it may be seen that the works they do originate in God.

19. "I am the Light that is over all things. I am all; from Me all came forth and to Me all is attained. Split a piece of wood, and I am there. Lift up a stone, and you will find Me there."

20. The next day, Jesus went out and noticed a tax collector named Matthew sitting in his tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me."

21. And Matthew left everything and followed Him.

22. That evening, Matthew held a large dinner at his home. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were sitting at the table with them.

23. The Pharisees and the scribes began complaining to His disciples saying, "Why does He eat and drink with tax collectors and common sinners?"

24. But Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a physician but rather it is the sick. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance; I have come to call the sinners. But go and learn what God means when He says, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.'"

25. So they said to Him, "The disciples of John the Baptist often fast and offer prayers at this time, and so do the religious leaders, but Yours are eating and drinking."

26. And Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and in those days they will fast.

27. "For truly I tell you, if you do not fast from the world, you will never find the Father's kingdom."

28. Then He told a parable: "No one makes a patch from unshrunk cloth and puts it on an old garment. If they do, the patch will shrink and tear the garment and the hole will be bigger than before the patch.

29. "And no one takes new wine and puts it in old wineskins. If they do, the old wineskins will burst and the wine will be spilled out and the skins ruined. Rather, new wine is put into new wineskins and both are preserved.

30. "And no one after drinking the old wine wishes for new wine. For they reason with themselves that the old wine is good enough."
