1. As they walked in the garden through the vineyard, Jesus explained, "I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it that it may bear more fruit.
2. "Abide in Me; for no branch can bear fruit on its own, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you bear fruit except you abide in Me.
3. "I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who abides in Me and I in them bears much fruit, but apart from Me, they can do nothing.
4. "Anyone not abiding in Me is thrown away as fallen branches that dry up, and they are gathered together in bundles and thrown into the fire to be burned.
5. "Any vine planted apart from My Father will not be strong. It will be uprooted and it will perish.
6. "Just as My Father has loved Me, I have loved you; therefore, abide in My love.
7. "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
8. "And that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father has commanded Me."
9. Then Bartholomew asked the Lord, "Teacher, what is Your commandment to us?"
10. And Jesus said, "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. By this love you have, all people will know that you are My disciples.
11. "For no greater love is there than that one lays down their life for their friends. Therefore, you are My friends if you do what I have commanded you.
12. "If you love Me, you will keep this commandment.
13. "You did not choose Me, but rather I chose you, and I have ordained you to go and bear fruit and that your fruit will endure.
14. "And now I no longer call you servants; for the servant does not know their master's business. But instead I call you friends, for everything I have heard from My Father, I have made known to you."
15. Then James said, "But the world does not understand you."
16. Jesus said, "Know that if the world hates you, it hated Me first. If you were of the world, the world would love you as one of its own.
17. "But because you are not of the world, because I chose you out of the world, the world hates you.
18. "If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you. If they kept My word, they would keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you, because they do not know the one who sent Me.
19. "If I had not come into the world and spoken to them, they would be innocent, but now the world has no excuse for its sin.
20. "Had I not done among them the works that no one else has done, they would be without sin, but now they have seen what I have done and hated Me and My Father, and they have hated us without cause.
21. "For the one who hates Me hates My Father as well.
22. "Nevertheless, when the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father comes to you, that Spirit will testify about Me, and you will testify also because you are with Me from the beginning.
23. "These things I have told you ahead of time, so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them, and it will keep you from stumbling.
24. "For the world will indeed make you outcasts from the temple, and there is an hour coming when those who kill you will believe they are offering a service to God.
25. "They will do these things because they have never known Me or God.
26. "But as for this world: Be passersby."
