1. The next day, John and Peter came to Jesus and said, "Where shall we go to prepare for Your final meal with us?"
2. Jesus said, "Go into the Holy City, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water, follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My guestroom in which I may eat My final meal with My disciples?"'
3. "And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare that room for us."
4. So, John and Peter did as Jesus said and found things just as He had said they would. Therefore, they prepared for their final meal with Him.
5. When the evening came, He arrived with the rest of the twelve, and as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you that one of you will betray Me--one of you who is eating with Me now."
6. At that, the disciples became grieved and said to Him one by one, "Surely, it is not I, Lord?"
7. And Jesus said, "He who has dipped his bread in the broth with Me is the one who will betray Me." But they had all dipped in the bowl with Christ, and no one knew whom He meant.
8. Then Jesus said, "The Son of Man must go out as it has been planned for Him, but woe to the one who betrays Him. It would be better for that one if they had never been born."
9. And Judas said to Jesus privately, "Surely it is not I, Teacher?" But Jesus knew that Satan had already put into the heart of Judas to betray Him. And Jesus said to him, "It is you. Therefore, what you must do, do quickly."
10. And immediately, Judas got up and left the room, and he went into the night. And no one knew what Jesus had said to him, but supposed He had sent him to get something for the supper.
11. Now, Jesus knowing that the Father had given all authority to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from the table and removed His dinner garments and put on old clothing.
12. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and dry them with a towel, as was the custom for the lowest of servants.
13. When He came to Peter, Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?"
14. Jesus said to him, "What I do, you do not understand now, but you will understand it hereafter."
15. Peter said to Him, "You will never wash my feet!" But Jesus said to him, "If I do not wash your feet, you have no part in Me."
16. Peter said, "Then wash not only my feet but my head and hands as well."
17. Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet to be completely clean, and you are clean."
18. When He had washed their feet, and changed back into his dinner clothes, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
19. "You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, because I am. If I then, the Lord and Teacher, washed your feet, you also must wash one another's feet. For I have given you the example to follow, and you should do as I did.
20. "Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, then you are blessed if you do them.
21. "Truly I tell you, the one who receives the one I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
22. While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after He had blessed it, He broke it into pieces and gave it to His disciples saying, "Take this and eat, for this is My body which is to be broken for you. Do this from now on in remembrance of Me."
23. And when He had passed the bread around, He took a glass of wine, and said to them, "Drink this, for this is My blood which is shed for the forgiveness of sins, and behold a new covenant is given to you.
24. "Truly, I tell you, I have much desired to eat this final meal with you before I suffer. For I will not eat this bread or drink this wine again until the day I drink it with you in My Father's kingdom."
25. Then, together they sang a hymn, and afterward left the upper room and went out to the Mount of Olives.
